Old signature on title: "Ex libris Joannis Jowani ab Albrechtsburg"). This work is one of the clearest early presentations of the Copernican theory of the motion of the earth.

Indeed, the work is so remarkable for its graphic description of Copernicus that it has been said that, had this work appeared earlier the Copernican theory would have been much more quickly and readily accepted and assimilated into Western thought.

Blaeu (1571-1638) was the most successful Dutch cartographer of his day, and among the most eminent map-makers in Europe.

With many wood-cut engravings, 8vo, contemp. vellum. Title in red and black. (Corner of title and first few leaves wormed, top and bottom, catching a few letters.

Blaeu, Willem Janszoon Pronunciation: [vi´lum yän´sOn blou] 1571-1638, Dutch cartographer and printer.

He studied astronomy and instrument making under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe.

The printing establishment he founded in Amsterdam was famed for its fine instruments, marine publications, globes and atlases, and especially for the folio atlas that he compiled.

Blaeu designed new presses incorporating important innovations; his shop was recognized as one of the best in that period.

The sons and grandsons of Blaeu continued his work.

1797 Copernicus Article & Engraving

This is the February 1797 issue of the "The Gentleman's Magazine" published in London by Sylvanus Urban. It measures 5-1/4" by 8-1/4" and contains 88 pages. It has a 2-1/4 page article on the life of Copernicus and an engraving of Copernicus. The engraving is on the top 1/2 of a full page engraving that also has an engraving of Beze Effigies.
