"In the year 1500 he went to Rome, where he also lectured on mathematics and astronomy." Although the painter, Wojciech Gerson (1831-1901), has a number of prominent contemporaries present at the lecture (including such celebreties as Leonardo da Vinci, Pope Alexander VI and the astronomer Domenico Maria Novara from Bologna University), it cannot be proved that all of them were present at one time.

Das Kopernikusbild soll den Augenblick, da den Astronomen die heliozentrische Erkenntnis übewältigte, schildern. Als Ort der Beobachtung ist (nach Brachvogel mit gewisser Berechtigung) ein westwärts vor das Turmdach des Kopernikustturms in Frauenburg hinausreichender Balkon gewählt, der auf der Burgmauer zum Tor hinüberführt.

Matejko hat Kopernikus natürlich als reinste Ausprägung eines polnischen Typus dargestellt, die keinerlei Beziehung auf die uns historisch überlieferten Bildnisse erkennen läßt. (Es dürfte in diesem Zusammenhang interessieren, daß Matejko von einer deutschstämmigen Mutter und einem tschechischen Vater stammt, was so ziemlich in allen biographischen Beschreibungen unterschlagen wird. (so z.B. auch in der deutschen Darstellung der polnischen Kunst von Alfred Kuhn (1.Auflage 1930, 2.Auflage 1937 (I), beide Berlin). Quelle: Die Burg, Krakauw 1943

Beneath the cameo style portrait is a diagram of the solar system .Excellent condition save for a marginal tear , previously repaired and re - inforced on the reverse. Wide margins all round and an eminently collectible and frameable item.Measuring approx. 10" x 7.5" ( 260mm x 190mm ) overall, 6.5" x 4.5 " 160mm x 120mm to the platemark.

This particular engraving is titled "Die Lezten Augenblicke Kopernikus", after German artist Ury Lesser (1862-1931),famous for his genre,landscape, portrait, canal and farm scenes. The engraving is done by V. Angerer, and is signed in the plate. The size of the engraving is 19" by 15" overall, with the image being 13-1/2" by 11-1/2".
